Cuenca
Puerto Lopez - Cuenca : 290 miles

Puerto Lopez left behind, we followed the coast up north before folding inland towards Guayaguil.
The road took us through Guayaguil once again, but this time we were spared from the chaos. The guy I asked for directions said "follow that bus!" and saved us an hour. Turns out there is a road that goes around the city, how about that!
80 miles to Cuenca, the road went to crap and the scenery grew beautiful. As we climbed up, the air got colder and the road deteriorated further. The moment I asked whether this could get any less comfortable, we found ourselves in thick fog which turned into water upon contact. Riding in two feet visibility was stressful, but luckily didn't last as long as I feared. We left the fog down below and continued on to Cuenca's 2500 meter altitude.

Clouds left below us on the climb to Cuenca.
When we arrived, I was tired but happy with what I found. So this is where Ecuador had been hiding its most beautiful city!
Accommodation with parking was proving impossible to find when we came across Hotel Cuenca with a big "Parking" sign under its logo. A centrally located luxurious hotel with a WiFi equipped large and comfy room for $20, including breakfast. That's what I'm talking about! But after check-in I discovered the uncomfortable truth: their parking is a big bold lie bolted on the concrete wall. Katirga would have to stay two blocks away at an independent parking lot. (Hotel Cuenca, Antonio Borrero 10-69 y Mariscal Lamar, Tel: 2833 711)
The morning started with a great breakfast, and I forgave being lied to. Then, it started raining. Cuenca still looked beautiful.

The green banks of Rio Tomebamba add to Cuenca's charm.

Tidy, cute, cobblestone streets.

The flower market.

Mostly political and hugely popular stand-up comedy shows are a common sight in Ecuador's plazas.
