Bajo Caracoles
Estancia La Siberia - Bajo Caracoles: 150 miles

More Ruta 40
After our daily intake of Ruta 40, we found what we were looking for. The only pump in 200 mile radius sits in front of a little store in a small village called Bajo Caracoles. The relief came when we got served, as this "pump" is known to be picky with customers. But the real source of satisfaction was the real coffee machine.
The make shift campsite nearby was all we needed for the night. The next day, we'd check out the "barbaro, lindo, precioso.." Cuevas de las Manos (Caves of the Hands).

Cañadón del Río Pinturas, the canyon near the paintings was a pretty sight.

The hand paintings
The polychrome rock paintings dating from 7370 BC are actually on the face of a wall, and not quite in a cave, in case it was the "cave" part that intrigued you. The site resides about 30 miles away from Bajo Caracoles, but takes close to an hour to reach on the bad, washboard road. Entry costs ~$13, and you should be done in an hour tops. Considering the cost of 3 hours and $13 plus precious gas for each, we really could've done without looking at them from behind a fence under the heat. Unless this really is what floats your boat, I'd say just check out the posters and move on.
