Punta Arenas
Ushuaia - Punta Arenas: 400 miles
Once I was back in road-worthy shape, we hit the road with Cecilia. But leaving at noon didn't get us to Porvenir soon enough for the 5 pm ferry, so we had to ride a long loop in the cold and then the dark (and it was all my fault because I didn't want to stop and camp when we had the chance). When we finally arrived Punta Arenas, the flier they handed out from a van dictated where we'd thaw and stay.
It was another pile up and the gang was already there. But these crazies camp in this weather, like they did even in Ushuaia, so it wouldn't be until the new year's eve that we'd all be under a roof. In the mean time, we were in need of logistical support, as the 20 year old Beemer had some gearbox trouble. I'd met Anibal a while ago in Argentina, saddling a shiny F800. One call and he was kind enough to meet and take us to his mechanic whom had all the equipment Cecilia needed. What? You thought she'd let some mechanic touch her bike? Ha!
And BTW, if riding Patagonia is one of your dreams but you lack the time (yet have the dough ;), Anibal is your man for guided tours on the new BMW F800 s.
On the new year's eve we gathered in the only bar that would let us in without a reservation or cover. We not only shamelessly smuggled in our own booze, but later managed to penetrate into the private party downstairs. It was a party of Brazilians who'd been stationed in Antarctica for 6 months, as we found out from one of them while eating their food and drinking their booze, thinking nobody knew, lol! (Obrigado!) May this be the worst day of our lives!
Supposedly there was a photographer among us, but somehow there's not a single picture from the place to share :P
