San Sebastian
Los Antiguos - Puerto San Julian: 410 miles
Puerto San Julian - San Sebastian: 415 miles
Having discovered that riding on 40 would not be any more scenic than on 3, I decided to zoom down to Ushuaia on the comfort of tarmac and give myself some time there before it all got crazy for Christmas. And hence our sudden turn back east which might look odd(er) as marked on the map.
Other than its proximity to Laguna del Carbón (Coal Lagoon), there isn't much to report of Puerto San Julian. At 105 metres (340 ft) below sea level, the depression is the lowest point of both the western and southern hemispheres, and the seventh lowest point on Earth. Had I known this then, I just might have ridden the extra 10-15 miles to see it.
A second long ride got us past the Chile border and on to the island of Tierra del Fuego. The road turned to dirt, the sun went low, the weather got cold, and everything started to look beautiful. A small hotel just before the second border crossing looked like the perfect place to call it a day. I checked in at 9:45 PM, and stepped out to watch the sunset :-)

Welcome to The Land of Fire.

Incredibly cold and beautiful.
